Hi Penny.

What kind of exotic plant do you have?

Plastic should be fine as long as its white/transparent and does not touch the plant (use stakes or a trellis).

Some exotic plants probably won't survive winter even with mulch and wind protection (at least not one as cold as last winter - shudder! Laughing )  - for instance if it's cannas then you stand a better chance by digging up the bulbs and storing them in a dry/dark/cold place.

May be it would be more safe to plant them in containers and to move in a frost-free place, for ex. a sunroom. It is also possible to buy a little greenhouse (plastik or glass) and to hide them there.
