Last autumn we planted tulip bulbs in two containers.
In one container we decided to go with a broad selection of colors. Bulbs were planted from a bag with purple tulip bulbs and from another bag with a mix of colors.
For the second container we decided on a more conservative selection - orange and pink tulips.

Tulip bulbs. From left to right: orange, pink, mix and purple.
After much anticipation the tulips began to bloom in April but all was not as expected!

Red tulips all over the place and ohh.. one yellow.
It appears you can have any color of tulip you want as long as it's red. To be be fair not all of them are "classic" red tulips - about half of them are what I would call "coral" red tulips and then there's one yellow tulip.
There are four tulips left that aren't blooming yet and I suspect they will turn out to be purple but that raises another issue I had not foreseen. Most of the tulips I planted appears to be of the type "Single early" - they have one flower per stem and bloom early. But what if the mix of tulip bulbs is also a mix of tulip types? Some types bloom mid season which could leave me with a container where most tulips have died down but others are just beginning to bloom. |
