The bulbs (Rhizomes) of Canna Indica are tender and best stored indoors for the winter if you live at a northern lattitude like me.
Once night temperatures drop below freezing the plants becomes dormant and it's time to dig up the bulbs.

Canna Indica is ready for indoor storage when temperatures drop below freezing.
Digging up the Canna or getting it out of a container can be challenging because the root system expands substantionally during the summer.

Canna Indica rhizomes.
The eye buds just below the surface of the soil are the top of the bulbs that we want to store for the winter. The stem above and the roots below can be cut away as they may cause moist and rot.
Canna Indica can be propagated into multiple new plants by splitting the bulbs. I split them by holding the intangled mess of bulbs at the sides and then breaking them apart.

Rhizomes has been split.
The soil is sprayed or rinsed away.
The bulbs must be stored in a dry and cool place. I chose to store them in an open paper bag in my basement. Temperatures in my basement are cool but always above freezing.
I think I have enough bulbs to propagate the Canna in two containers next spring - if they all survive the winter - fingers crossed |
